Maybe there was a kid who was going to do something that would change the world, maybe it was just a kid who would grow up, get married, have kids, and a new set of people would be born. Didn't have to be spectacular, just had to be. Or, leave the gun seller's shills bleating, and letting multiple future possibilities lie bleeding out, while we all look on and say, "Oh, that's terrible!" and carry on waiting for next time, hoping we can see it at distance. History is not going to be kind to this shite.
